Solway Firth's craggy shoreline is a short drive away, and the path south to Ravenglass is one of the UK's most scenic and serene. Cockermouth is the birthplace of William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame), and Wordsworth's Georgian family home is a National Trust site.
